A social enterprise is a business model that puts social and environmental impact on equal footing with financial sustainability. It might be mission-driven business; a nonprofit with earned income; or a worker-owned cooperative. The aim is to create shared prosperity.
Providence, Rhode Island’s Social Enterprise Greenhouse (SEG) cultivates and supports these enterprises. Each year, SEG supports about 300 social entrepreneurs through programs and services in both English and Spanish. Among its many mentoring and training programs, its Impact Clinics are 1:1 advisory sessions with mentors. Patent agent Scott Keeley is one of these mentors, offering intellectual-property advice to SEG’s entrepreneurs.
